Life A.C. (After Child)

Thanks to all of you who sent good wishes! Sky is a wonderful baby, eating, sleeping and observing, and crying only when he is hungry or being wiped.

For me the biggest change is not wanting to be away from him for extended periods. But I was just in Jasper Park, Alberta, speaking at a conference of Alberta Teachers. They have it really tough convention-wise, alternating annually between Jasper Park (the most beautiful place I've ever spoken) and Bamff! Great people, very interested in ways to increase student engagement, and (because of their oil reserves) a Province that has some money to invest in Education! I'm looking forward to more work there, especially at Jasper Lodge :-)

Now I'm in LA, where I will be attending the Education Arcade's Games in Education conference, put on by people primarily from MIT and the University of Wisconsin. The program is available at this website. I'll also be attending a conference on games in education sponsored by Governor Mark Warner of VA. He is Chairman of the Governor's Council, and it will be interesting to see what he proposes.

Finally, two of the articles recently posted to my site, "In Educational Games, Size Matters," and "What Can You Learn from A Cell Phone -- Almost Anything!" have been picked up for publication by Education Technology Magazine and Innovate!, respectively. And we are in the final stages of selecting a publisher for my new book "Don't Bother Me, Mom -- I'm Learning," which I expect to be out before Christmas!" (By the way, a piece of the argument about why games are good for you is made nicely by Steve Johnson in his new book "Everything Bad Is Good For You.")
